ABOUT UTC MOCK TRIAL
The University of Tennessee Mock Trial team was founded in 2008 and has been led by attorney-coach Michael Giglio from its inception.
In the last 6 seasons, UTC Mock Trial has earned 50 individual awards, 8 bids to the American Mock Trial post-season competition, 2 bids to the National Championship, 9 top-3 tournament finishes, and a whole lot of airline and hotel points.
Any current UTC undergraduate student with an interest in public speaking, debate, acting, law school, or academic competition is encouraged to join us. Come be a part of one of the most successful team in the nation!
Michael 'Gig' Giglio is an attorney and judge in Catoosa County with the Georgia State Bar. He has been coaching with UTC's mock trial program since its inception. In addtion, he is an adjunct professor at the university, teaching (the highly recommended) Justice and the American Trial Process. When not coaching or spending time with his wife, Greta, he is bemoaning the inevitable downfall of the Georgia Bulldogs at the hand of the Tennessee Vols.
Erika Hyde is an attorney at Miller & Martin in Chattanooga and has been involved in AMTA as a competitor, judge or coach since 2006. She was most recently head coach of the Duke mock trial program, before joining the UTC Mocs coaching staff in 2015. When she's not coaching, Erika enjoys exploring Chattanooga's restaurants with her husband and Chattanooga's dog parks with her shih tzu, Pepper.
Alanna Rice joined UTC’s program as a Sophomore and competed during her remaining years of undergrad. Alanna’s most memorable moment was having the pleasure of competing on the first UTC team to make it to nationals. Since graduating UTC with a business degree, Alanna has begun working in the legal arena through The Chapter 13 Trustee’s Office. Alanna hopes to attend law school next Fall, although she can’t imagine leaving behind the program that has given her so much. In Alanna’s free time, she enjoys traveling and spending lazy days alongside her pup, Sampson- who can sometimes be found at practice.
Yonishka Voorhees first took a sip of the Mock Trial Kool-Aid while studying at UTC and hasn’t looked back. After competing on a record breaking team throughout undergrad, Yonishka returned to assist in coaching the program upon graduating. Yonishka’s goal is to play a role in positively impacting her student’s lives through Mock Trial in the same way her coaches influenced her (aka distributing the Kool-Aid). In her spare time, Yonishka enjoys reading, being outdoors and spending time with her family.
